Millet`s The Gleaners 1857 & The Thai Farmers by Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook

I just finished reading Pig Earth, the first in the Into Their Labours trilogy by John Berger. I took my time with this book. Berger’s studies of 19th century peasant life tell of the value of work and of a life so closely tied to the cycles of birth and death. Efforts are made to preserve village traditions as younger generations emigrate to cities to earn wages. Soon there will be no one left to continue this history, to retell. There’s a certain urgency to continue this way of life alongside a commitment to self sufficiency….it’s about survival. The characters are always in preparation: working the land, milking the cows, preparing the harvest. Their work is never quite finished.

I would have loved to have seen The Three Lives of Lucie Cabrol as adapted for the stage.
